DUOS Leader auditions

DUOS has two Leaders: one for the Symphony Orchestra, and one for the Chamber Orchestra. Applications are now closed for these positions for 2019-20. To apply, you must be a violinist who will be an undergraduate or postgraduate student at Durham University during the academic year 2019-20. Our leaders work with the conductors to manage rehearsals and desking, coordinate the string section (bowing in particular), and they sit on the audition panel during fresher’s week. The leaders act as the main link between the orchestra and the conductor.

Auditions for both leader positions will take place on ***. The audition will involve sight reading provided on the day, a short solo piece chosen by the applicant (without accompaniment and we will stop you after about 5 minutes), and a general interview. Applicants will also be required to lead and rehearse a string quartet (the quartet will be provided, and music will be released a week prior to the audition). Experience of leading is not necessary.

To apply to be one of our Leaders, please email orchestral.society@durham.ac.uk with your name, year, and mobile number by ***. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us using the email address provided above.

DUOS Concerto auditions

Each year, DUOS gives up to four people the opportunity to play a concerto or solo piece accompanied by the Symphony or Chamber orchestra. Applications to play a concerto with DUOS in the year 2019-20 are now closed. Please note that applications for solo pieces accompanied by orchestra are also welcomed. Previous concertos have included Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs for Baritone, Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No.2 (in Durham Cathedral) and the Reinecke Flute Concerto. All instruments are welcome to apply, and membership of DUOS is not required – however, you must be an undergraduate or postgraduate student at Durham University during the academic year 2019-20.

Auditions will take place on ***. You should prepare an outer movement of your proposed concerto which MUST be accompanied by piano (on a separate piano in the case of a piano concerto), and accompanists are NOT provided. We may stop you if the movement lasts for longer than 15 minutes. For solo pieces accompanied by orchestra, you should prepare an accompanied extract of similar length to a concerto’s outer movement. Applicants will also have a general interview following their audition in which they will be asked about their chosen piece.

To apply to play a concerto, please email orchestral.society@durham.ac.uk with your name, year, instrument, mobile number, and chosen piece by ***. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us using the email address provided above.
